El Pirata Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales was a young man full of life who began to raise eyebrows on social media as he pulled off preposterous stunts and downed unbelievable quantities of booze. Though he was still below the legal drinking age in Mexico, he brazenly admitted to battling alcoholism. Because he posted hilarious and gutsy videos online, it earned him a huge following. In fact, his time to fame was like catching fire overnight. That life of fame tragically ended this past Monday, December 18, when four unidentified individuals killed him at a bar in Jalisco, Mexico. While Juan Luis was indeed wild, his wild ways were way more tame than what those viral clips suggested.
But beneath all that bluster, even he harbored dreams of a different future-one in which he could leave his booze-hazy lifestyle behind and become, of all things, a singer. His was a story of contrasts-the boy who entertained millions and fought personal battles, the dreamer who dreamed of a second act. Unfortunately, he never lived long enough to see those dreams fulfilled, and his fans and family had to mourn the death of a young man whose promise would never be fulfilled.
Shot in a Bar
Local police reported that four unidentified individuals entered the bar armed with weapons and headed straight for the table where Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales, famously known as “El Pirata de Culiacán,” was sitting. In what appears to have been a targeted attack, Rosales was shot more than 15 times, leaving no doubt about the intent behind the brutal crime. Authorities are speculating that this was an act of aggression, but the exact motive remains unclear.
The devastating attack not only ended Rosales’s young life but also left a broader ripple of trauma. During the shooting, a woman was reportedly injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment, though details about her condition have not been released. The news of Rosales’s death sent shockwaves through his fanbase, confirming the tragic end of a life that had garnered so much attention, albeit controversially.
“El Pirata de Culiacán” was larger than life on social media, but his sudden and violent death is a sobering reminder of the dangers and complexities that can sometimes accompany fame. Fans mourn the loss of the 17-year-old, while questions linger about what led to such a senseless and violent act.
Possible Motive?
El Pirata de Culiacan was very popular on social media for starring in eccentric videos. In a video posted a few weeks ago, he offended El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
It is not known at this point whether Rosales’ murder was linked to this video or not.
Admitted to Being an Alcoholic
In a recent video, Rosales invited people to visit Menta2 Cantaros, which is at the intersection of Calle Axes Las Torres in Los Cajetes in Jalisco.
Though he was not of legal drinking age in Mexico, he became famous on social networks because of how he consumed alcohol.
In a June 2017 interview, Rosales expressed his desire to have a career in music, and leave behind his life of being known for his drunkenness. In the same interview, he admitted to being an alcoholic.

Dreams of Being a Singer
He first gained fame in 2015 after being caught on video drinking a bottle of vodka, which caused him to fall to the ground, inviting hilarious reactions from viewers.
He continued this habit of excessive drinking despite, being underage, and increased his popularity. He imagined a future in which he would not excessively drink, and said that his intention was to sober up within the next three years saying, “Leave the tap in peace.”
In an interview with Univision Entertainment, Rosales revealed his dream of being on stage, “I want to learn to sing now, that’s going to be my motto. I want to be upstairs but singing and hitting the show, that would be fine, dog.”
